Diabetes! what you should know.


Diabetes is a disease that arise when your blood sugar (also known as your blood glucose) is too high. Blood sugar is your main source of energy and comes from the food you eat. Insulin, is a hormone produced by the pancreas, which helps in regulating blood sugar. When your body doesn't secrete enough insulin, glucose stays in the blood. Too much glucose in the blood can cause health problems. There is no cure for diabetes, but there are steps you can take to manage and stay healthy.

Types of diabetes

There are different types of diabetes. The most common types of diabetes are Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational diabetes. Here is an overview of them:

Type 1 diabetes

In this case of diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Your immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing pancreatic cells. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, but it can occur at any age. People with type 1 diabetes must take insulin daily to stay alive.

Type 2 diabetes 

In  type 2 diabetes, the body does not produce or use insulin well. Type 2 diabetes can occur at any age, even in childhood. However, this type of diabetes is most common in middle-aged and older people. Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes. 

Gestational Diabetes 

Gestational diabetes affects some women during pregnancy. In most cases, this type of diabetes disappears after the baby is born. However, if you have gestational diabetes, you are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes later in life.

 People that are up to or over 45 years of age or have a family history of diabetes or are overweight, are  more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Certain health problems, lack of exercise, race, high blood pressure etc can also affect your chances of developing type 2 diabetes.

 Diabetes can also advance to cause problems such as
 heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye problems, tooth disease, nerve damage, foot problems etc.

How to prevent diabetes

There are steps you can take to reduce the chances of a problem. Making a few little lifestyle adjustments today is most likely to help you prevent diabetes and major health issues associated with diabetes which may include: damage to your nerves, kidneys, and heart. 
Here are some ways:

1. Reduce excess weight

Reduced weight lowers the risk of developing diabetes. In one big trial, participants who lost around 7% of their body weight by dietary and exercise improvements saw a nearly 60% reduction in their chance of getting diabetes. To stop the advancement of their condition, the American Diabetes Association advises prediabetic individuals (those who have been tested with symptoms linking to diabetes) to lose between 7 and 10 percent of their body weight. Greater advantages will result from further weight loss.

2. Regular exercise.

Regular exercise has many benefits. Exercise can help you lower blood sugar. It is important and ideal to exercise regularly as you want to reduce blood sugar.

3. Eat vegetables

Vegetables with a low to moderate glycemic index, such as carrots, improve blood sugar control and reduce the risk of weight gain. Nitrate-rich foods, such as beets, are one of the best vegetables for people with type 2 diabetes. Fiber helps control blood sugar.

4. Eat healthy foods.

Healthy food gives your body the appropriate things for growth and development.

5. Reduce sugar intake

As the saying goes "Too much of everything is not good." Too much sugar would increase your risk to disease. Reducing your sugar intake would help. Be sure to seek medical advice from your doctor.

6. Don't be inactive

You would want to burn some energy so as you can reduce blood sugar. Taking a walk, or doing some chores can be good enough.

7. Observe regular check ups

Regular check up can be keep track of your sugar level.
